بیماری کووید ۱۹، ناشی از ویروس کرونا سارس ۲، اخیراً به یک مشکل مهم و تأثیرگذار بر سلامت در جهان تبدیل شده است. بیماری کووید ۱۹ عمدتاً با تظاهرات تنفسی آن شناخته می‌شود. اما، مطالعات اخیر افزایش تعداد بیماران مبتلا به علائم گوارشی مانند اسهال، استفراغ، تهوع و ناراحتی شکمی را نشان داده است. ویروس کرونا سارس۲، دستگاه گوارش را از طریق اتصال به گیرنده آنزیم مبدل آنژیوتانسین II که بر روی انتروسیت‌های ایلئوم و کولون بیان می شود، آلوده می کند. معمولاً علائم گوارشی دیرتر از علائم تنفسی ظاهر می شود. حضور ژنوم (RNA) ویروس کرونا سارس ۲ در نمونه های مدفوع برای دوره های طولانی، حتی پس از پاکسازی تنفسی، نگرانی در مورد انتقال از طریق مدفوع افزایش یافته است. در این مطالعه، اثرات ویروس کرونا سارس ۲ را بر روی سیستم گوارشی بررسی شده است.
