We read with great interest the article by Amini et al. (Iran J Med Microbiol. 2025;19(3):150–8), titled “Prevalence of pslA and pslB Biofilm-Related Genes in Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolates from ICU Patients: A Cross-Sectional PCR-Based Study.” The authors’ investigation into biofilm-associated genes among multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates from intensive care unit (ICU) patients provides valuable insight into the molecular basis of biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance in clinical settings.
The reported prevalence of pslA (98.9%) and pslB (100%) genes in biofilm-forming isolates is striking, emphasizing the genetic uniformity and clinical persistence of P. aeruginosa strains within ICU environments. These findings are particularly significant given the global rise in carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa and the increasing burden of device-associated infections. The strong correlation between pslA/pslB gene presence and MDR phenotypes reinforces the concept that biofilm formation is not merely a survival strategy but an integrated resistance mechanism that shields bacterial communities from antimicrobial agents and host immune responses.
